The Power of Tilt

Power tilt is a feature that allows for the tilting of the entire body backward, shifting the weight to the back while maintaining constant hip and knee angles. Traditionally, this movement has been limited to tilting the body rearward, but now there is also the option for an anterior (forward) tilt, known as ActiveReach.

Depending on the power wheelchair model chosen, users can benefit from up to 50° of backward tilt. This feature offers a range of potential health benefits. By positioning the body in a tilted position, gravity can assist in repositioning the user further back into the seating. This not only provides a more comfortable position but also reduces pressure on the bottom compared to sitting upright.

Moreover, power tilt can be advantageous to promote activity tolerance in the wheelchair. It allows for a restful position if needed and conserves energy, reducing the frequency of needing to get back into bed or transfer between activities. The tilted position also helps manage back pain by minimizing the impact of gravity on the spine. This means users may be able to tolerate more active time in their chairs, enhancing their overall mobility and participation.

For individuals with limited neck range of motion, the use of power posterior tilt becomes even more valuable. It enables them to easily see their environment by adjusting their position to a more suitable angle.

In addition to the health benefits, power tilt also aids in functional activities. When navigating inclines such as ramps, tilting the chair slightly back can help stabilize the user's positioning and provide a sense of security. Moreover, when entering or exiting a modified van, the tilt feature ensures that users don't accidentally bump their heads at the doorway, enhancing safety and convenience.

Power anterior tilt can also be used functionally to aide in reaching forward, helping users access table tops and counter tops for work or food preparation and for reaching into closets or into the refrigerator. When used in combination with power seat elevation and power articulating legrests, power anterior tilt can be helpful when performing stand-pivot transfers like moving from your wheelchair to a seat lift chair.
