Wheelchair frame material

Frame material choice plays a pivotal role in how someone finds an ultra-lightweight manual wheelchair. It is key because frame choice affects the lightweight, durability, and configuration characteristics of a manual wheelchair. A more in-depth understanding of the materials and their specific application can improve confidence and clinical decision making.

Aluminum-new

6000 & 7000 series aluminum

Aluminum became and still is the preferred metal because it was so much lighter than steel and because of its relatively low cost. In the ULMWC industry there are two types of aluminum alloys that are used: 6000 series and 7000 series.

Titanium-new

Titanium

Titanium is a metal with the highest strength to weight ratio on the planet. There is literally nothing out there like it. Titanium is not only incredibly strong and durable, it can also be shaped and welded together to match a wheelchair user’s body shape without sacrificing strength.

Carbon-new

Carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber is a versatile composite material made from thousands of fibers either woven together or aligned in a unidirectional non-woven fabric. Its unique feature allows engineers to tailor the fiber orientation for varying stress responses, enhancing products like wheelchairs.

Wheelchair frame type

At TiLite, we like to offer our customers choices in the types of frames that best suit their individual needs. This includes more than just the obvious differentiator of a folding or rigid chair. We offer different frame designs in both of those categories, with different frame materials and price points. We further differentiate our rigid chair lineup by single (mono) tube and dual tube designs, each having their own benefits. Mono tube designs are the most popular as there's only a single frame tube that follows the body, while dual tube designs offer an additional lower tube for added strength and performance.

Mono-Tube

Mono Tube

Mono tube designs are the most popular as there's only a single frame tube that follows the body.

Dual-tubeDual Tube

Dual tube designs offer an additional lower tube for added strength and performance.

Configuration

Configuration means how the chair is designed and set up for the individual. This includes more than just the different options and seating choices, at TiLite we like to focus on how a chair is built for the individual. Most of our designs are custom fabricated to match each order as closely as possible and allow the user to specify individual bends to fit their ideal seating position. We call this concept TiFit and it can be pushed even further by options not on our standard order forms but available through our CMD (Creative Mobility Division).

Customization

TiLite understands that everyone has different postural and mobility needs, and while our order forms meet the needs of most users, sometimes you need individual solutions. Through the TiLite Creative Mobility Division, customers are able to work with our team of engineers, customer experience, and production to come up with creative solutions to their unique postural and mobility needs.

Ready to figure out which TiLite is best for you?

TiLite celebrates 25 years of excellence

Welcome to our site celebrating TiLite’s 25th year anniversary! Our first chairs went on sale in May of 1999 and quickly became known for their unique style and strength, with each chair being custom fabricated to the user’s specifications out of aerospace grade titanium tubing. We have continued in this tradition over the years with the addition of different materials to the lineup with aluminum and most recently carbon fiber. TiLite has always been at the forefront of technology and design, offering different material options and designs to satisfy different customer’s needs.
