ROHO® Inflation: Atmospheric pressure

We recently reviewed the five easy steps for setting up and checking your ROHO cushion’s inflation level. Did you know there is also an optional set up using Atmospheric Inflation?

Atmospheric inflation refers to a process where a device or object is filled with air from the surrounding atmosphere to achieve a desired level of pressure or volume. This method is commonly used in various applications, such as inflating balloons, tires, air mattresses, and even certain types of cushions like ROHO cushions!

A clinician who is experienced in seating and positioning should determine first whether atmospheric inflation is appropriate for the individual’s seating needs. A ROHO cushion is most effective when there is 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) to 1 inch (2.5 cm) of air between the user’s bottom and the seating surface.

Important note: Do not place any weight on the cushion during atmospheric inflation; this set up must be completed without the user sitting on the cushion.


 

To get started, place the ROHO cushion on the chair making sure it is centered with the air cells up and the inflation valve in the front left corner.

*If you have a QUADTRO SELECT cushion, make sure the green knob is pressed in to unlock the ISOFLO Memory Control before following the next steps.

Step 1 
Turn the valve counterclockwise to open. Slide the inflation pump’s rubber nozzle over the valve and inflate the cushion until the air cells feel firm.

Step 2 
Remove the inflation pump from the valve. Do not close the inflation valve.

Step 3 
Allow air to escape from the inflation valve.

TIP: Listen (or place your hand in front of the inflation valve) to confirm that air is no longer flowing out. This could take 1-2 minutes or longer. Close the valve.

Step 4 
Have the user transfer into and sit in the chair, making sure the cushion is centered underneath. The individual should be seated in their normal sitting position. If you’re assisting the user with set up, always ask for permission before initiating Step 5.

Step 5 
Perform a hand check: Slide your hand between the cushion’s surface and the individual’s pelvis. Lift their leg slightly and identify their lowest bony prominence. Then lower their leg to a sitting position. If necessary, turn the valve counterclockwise to let out air while keeping your hand under the person’s lowest bony prominence. Release air until you can slightly move your fingertips. Turn the valve clockwise to close.

Remember to regularly check the inflation level of your cushion as air loss could occur over time due to normal use. Also, inspect your ROHO cushion for any signs of damage and if you notice any issues, promptly repair or replace your cushion to maintain its effectiveness and prevent further damage.

NOTE: Atmospheric inflation can be used for the ROHO Single compartment cushions (LOW, MID and HIGH PROFILE), QUADTRO SELECT HIGH PROFILE cushion and ENHANCER cushion as well as the MOSAIC cushion. Please check with your experienced seating and positioning clinician if this set up is appropriate for you!
