Blair's 5 Minutes Chair Check (Manual Wheelchair Users)

There’s no better source of practical advice than someone who uses a manual wheelchair every day. From improving propulsion efficiency and reducing fatigue to keeping your chair in top condition, experienced users often develop simple techniques that make a big difference.

In this series, Blair - a Permobil manual wheelchair user and team member shares his favourite tips, tricks, and lessons learned to help others get the most out of their wheelchair and stay active, independent, and confident.

Before leaving home, it's a good idea to give your manual wheelchair a quick safety check. Make sure your tyres are properly inflated, the brakes are working correctly, and the quick-release wheels are securely locked in place. Check that your cushion, footrests, and any accessories are fitted correctly and free from damage. Taking a minute to inspect your wheelchair can help prevent unexpected issues, improve efficiency, and give you confidence that your chair is ready for the day ahead. A simple pre-trip check can make all the difference in keeping you safe, comfortable, and independent wherever your day takes you.
