This is the second instalment in a three-part story.
If you have not read the first segment in this story, please read that first - Matt and Kerryn: Their Journey.
One night at a Blues rugby game at Eden Park, Matt let slip to a few friends his desire to propose to Kerryn again and to be standing when he did. It seemed like a dream that was going to take some time, so his friends decided to speed up the timeline a little.
Permobil New Zealand worked with Matt during secret meetings, lending him a standing power wheelchair, helping him to practice using it and standing for some time in it. The wonderful team at Diamonds on Richmond helped Matt choose a ring for Kerryn, gifting it to him.
One Friday morning in June, Matt and his whanau, alongside some special friends, arrived at Eden Park. Kerryn and their daughters had been invited to come along a bit later, thinking Matt was doing a photoshoot about the power wheelchair for Permobil, and that some family photos would be taken to say thank you. Little did she know what was about to unfold.
Through some clever switching around by the Permobil and Eden Park teams, Kerryn found herself walking through the players' tunnel, out to the pitch, where Matt stood, flanked by their two daughters. She didn't even see the message on the big screen, asking her to say yes to Matt again. She just saw him standing and only had eyes for him. Tearing up, she walked up to him, and they had their first standing hug in over 11 years. Then she looked around and saw their families and friends. She looked up and saw the big screens. And with the help of their daughters, Matt proposed.
Naturally, Kerryn said yes!
